Great playing and sounding ES335.
This 1991 Gibson ES-335 is stamped "not for sale". This does not mean it’s a 2nd or lower quality. It was likely a factory prototype, artist relations, Gibson employee-owned, or promotional guitar, as they were produced for internal use and not intended for retail sale. This stamp makes the guitar a rare and unique item, potentially valuable to collectors, despite it not being a standard retail model.
From the interwebs:
Reasons for "not for sale" stamps
* Employee-owned models: Some guitars were made for Gibson employees to use, and the "not for sale" stamp signified they were not part of the regular retail stock.
* Promotional or demo models: These guitars may have been used for artist relations, marketing purposes or demonstrations at trade shows and events.
* Prototypes: A guitar with this stamp could have been an early version of a new model, a trial for a new finish, or a special design being tested before being officially released.
What to consider if you own or are considering buying one
* Value: The "not for sale" stamp makes the guitar a unique and potentially more valuable collector's item, especially if its history can be documented.
* Authenticity: The stamp itself isn't a guarantee of authenticity, but it is a strong indicator of a unique history. It's still important to verify other aspects of the guitar, such as serial number and build quality.
* Provenance: The history of a guitar with a "not for sale" stamp can significantly impact its value. A documented history of its use as a promotional or employee guitar could make it even more appealing to collectors.
I’ve never worried about the stamp or the origins of the guitar. I played it in a guitar store, liked it, it sounded and felt like a good ES335 should and so I purchased it and played it.
Comes with the Original Gibson case.
