Collings 290 with Lollar p90’s
Named for the scenic US 290 highway that winds past the Collings shop and through the Texas Hill Country, the 290 is a modern day tribute to the original working man’s rock and roll guitar. A solid mahogany body and neck are complemented by two Lollar Soapbar P90 pickups for a tone that shows off the amazing harmonic range and dynamics of this often underrated configuration.
There’s no disguising that Collings looked to the Gibson Les Paul Special as inspiration for the 290.
The deep cherry-hued, nitrocellulose lacquer-finished body is a single piece of beautiful mahogany—a formula for sweet resonance. But where the Les Paul is primarily a slab of right angles, the 290 is contoured more like a Stratocaster—with a subtle body contour on the upper bass bout and a more severe taper on the back of the upper bass bout. There’s also a deep cutaway at the waist on the back of the guitar, as well as a gentle taper on the treble side of the neck heel that gives you a little extra access to the upper frets. This is a comfortable and well-balanced guitar.
The mahogany neck itself, is topped by an East Indian rosewood fretboard and ebony peghead cap.
Collings believe that a fairly substantial mass in the neck is essential to making an electric guitar work harmonically. The balance Collings strikes between tone and comfort on the 290 is remarkable. There’s a lot to hold onto for big bends, and the extra substance offers an ideal resistance. The 12" fretboard radius has a Gibson-style contour that’s good for chording or bending, though Collings deviates from tradition by using a 24 7/8" scale.
The neck profile is full without being too large.
Collings’ custom made ABR bridge is beautifully milled and put together. Elsewhere on the guitar, the minimal hardware is similarly top-shelf. Tuners are quality Sperzel locking variety, and the pickups are too shelf Lollar p90’s.
The 290 DC is in most ways an exercise in luxury minimalism, with a wealth of tones within. It has a voice all of its own.
The Collings 290 is an exemplary guitar. It’s a textbook study in how the simplest design concepts can be refined to make a great guitar. The combination of the immaculate construction, the Lollar P-90’s and Collings’ own dedication to the guitar’s development give it a broad personality that covers all bases.
